Couple's Tri

I did the Couples Tri (http://www.couplestri.com/) this morning with friend Monica as my partner. Her husband Jose and his friend Shawn and Tony and Priscilla all raced too. Mike and the kids came out to watch and so did Mike and Dottie (Tony and Mike's parents) as well as Priscilla's parents. It was fun to have lots of people to cheer us on! I didnt see many Trizoners I knew but still got quite a few "Go TriZones" on the course.

The day started out kind of crappy. Last night when I tried to go to bed I couldnt fall asleep. I just layed in bed all night and never could fall asleep. I occasionally would get close to falling asleep and then Loren was complaining about her ear and fussed at 245 and 4 which didnt help. I cant figure out why I couldnt sleep. I didnt feel particularly stressed or anything but maybe I was a little, though I never had this problem with any other race I've done. Anyway, I hadnt fallen asleep at all yet when my alarm went off at 5:30. Oh joy. I figured, oh well, and got up and got ready to race today. Priscilla picked me up and we drove down to the race. Tony and Priscilla helped me find a transition spot and pump up my tires and stuff. I got my stuff all set up and felt an ant bite my foot. Then next thing I knew there were like 20 on me and bit my arms and legs and it all started burning. Ok, at this point I pretty much wanted to go home and back to bed, but I didnt! Go me.

I went to the swim start and found Monica and Jose. Jose was in the first start wave and Monica and I were in the second. Tony and Priscilla were in a later married couples wave. Off to the races. I actually felt really great for most of the swim. It wasnt too crowded once the wave got going, I had room to actually swim normally for quite a bit of the race except for maybe around the turn bouys. I was about 10% faster than at Danskin on the swim.

Got out and walked/ran to my bike, found it quickly, wiped my feet real quick and threw on socks shoes helmet glasses and off to bike. I felt good for the bike ride too, I was ready for the steep hill after the turn and made it up easily with no panicked shifting or anything. I thought I was quite a bit faster on the bike but was actually about 15 seconds slower than Danskin, weird! I drank pretty much my whole gatorade on the bike and had swallowed a couple race fruit snack things.

Got back to transition and wasted probably 10 seconds by not going quite far enough when I stopped to look for my spot, then found my spot, threw on running shoes and headed out. I felt a little stitch in my chest at the start of the run but that went away after a minute or so. I was surprised I was only at 1 mile when I hit the 1 mile marker but I still felt pretty good. I was getting tired and moving slow but still felt like I was doing ok on the run even when I got to the start of big hill at the end. Before the hill I had been passed by Monica, Tony and Priscilla. I liked seeing familiar faces and I knew they'd all pass me anyways :) Anyhow at the bottom of the big hill I still felt pretty good and the hill didnt look too bad to me so I thought it would be better than Danskin. About half way up I started getting really hot and got slower. I almost walked once but the lady behind me told me not to, that I could do it so I kept slowly jogging. By about 3/4 the way up I was really dragging. I just kept plugging along and eventually made it to the flatter finish area. I didnt have much left to run it out to the finish line but I did my best and was happy to see an approximately 5 minute quicker time flash across than my Danskin time. Overall the race felt good to me except that last bit. I was happy to have had a little faster swim and I was happy to have not struggled on any of the big hills on the bike. So over all good time!

I hope to do a better job at my training to see if I can get a little faster and get to where I dont energy crash right before the end of the race. I would really like to run much faster.

Stats below:

Compared to Danskin: Dropped 2:30 off swim, Bike added about 0:20 (weird, I thought I was faster), run dropped about 0:45, transitions dropped about 2:00

It lies! You aren't 36 yet! Are you? Cause if you are, I totally lost a year.

Your age for USAT purposes is the age that you turn that calendar year. I will be 36 in August this year so for all of 2009 my race age is 36.

Yeah, it's a stupid rule they started a few years ago. No more aging up during the year!

Congrats on a great race! Man, I never realized the connection between you and Priscilla! I trained with her in Texas Iron!
